Week 9 of the northern adventure

 Happy Thanksgiving everyone:

Yes, living here has given me a lot of time to reflect on what is important--to be absolutely thankful for all that we have, and to remember friends and relatives.  Connections are the most important thing!

The weather is very west coast, foggy, damp and  chilly cold.  It has not been so windy lately, just that autumn grey----because there are no colors from the trees--just the browns, yellows and blacks of the tundra.

Most people from the village have gone camping--this means they have little shacks in the hinterland, where they sleep by night, and hunt, fish and berry pick by day.  These are little cabins with one room,  a stove of sorts, and places to sleep.  We went to one at the beginning of the year--pretty rustic--no electricity.

For Thanksgiving, the locals will gather the families together for a meal of seal, caribou and fish.

On my walk this morning, I took some pictures of the village buildings.  I am most fascinated by the old Hudson's Bay Trading post.  It was built in the early 1950's  and it was the main stay for supplies.   I have seen  old pictures of the community from those years, and there were only foot paths, no roads.

Yes, a lot of
wires--nothing underground.

Storage sheds for the atv and snowmobiles.

Old Hudson's  Bay trading post.

One of the 3 coop stores.

The beautiful local harbour.

Typical homes.

Beautiful dogs  coming out to say hi!

Child care center, rarely open  because no one wants to work.  Consequently, teachers bring their kids to school.

Interesting stories about the family who built these 2 blue houses  on the hill.   The one on the far right is vacant.

More local housing.

The biggest coop and post office.

The village office.

One of 3 churches.
