Second week done!!!  18 more weeks until Christmas!!


Hello everyone:


It has been very busy getting settled in.  Trying to unpack 20 boxes, and get situated in the new class room and school has indeed been crazy.  Tonight for the first time, I actually have time to reflect on what has and is happening.

As you can see from the pictures it is pretty barren, and well above the treeline.  There is beauty, if you look.  I sent some pictures from our walk last Sunday.  Today, we took the children berry picking.  The berries are tiny, tiny, tiny.  You have to pick quite a few to just fill a small sandwich bag.

The first picture is towards Ungava Bay-those two little kids were very serious about berry picking.   The second picture is that of a couple of children really enjoying the eating part.

There are also many wild mushrooms.  I am not sure if you can eat these brown ones, but you can eat the white ones--they look like the button mushrooms you get in the store, but they have way better flavor.

The weather has been  interesting to say the least--it can blow up a storm in minutes, and it can rain with water bouncing off the ground.  Today it was warm and calm, so the giant mosquitoes had a lovely time of eating us.  Good thing I brought all that deet!!!

Most of the children are delightful, but there is always one!!!!!!!!!!

My job this weekend is to hook up the tv.  I finally have the internet, and I will get a landline next week.  There is no cell phone service here.

End of the first week back

 Greetings all...... I can hardly believe it is the end of the first week back--although it is the second full week including travel.   The students were a little tired and out of sorts on Monday morning,  showing me the attituded--we got through that one by 11:30, and things are back on track....holiday is over, queen Helene, queen of mean is back!!! Weather has been interesting.  Monday evening was a blizzard, and what a storm!  100k  plus winds howling and snow blowing.  By Tuesday morning, it was over, so classes were not cancelled (awe!) We got the big wind on Wednesday as well, but we still went in. Temperatures hovering between minus 20 and  minus 50.  It is so cold, the water pump at the water plant is frozen. That means no water--so what we have is what we have! Week 2, Ivujivik

 Greetings all Well, I have survived the transition--was a little bumpy with one child, but I think we are well on our way to working together.  I must say the students here are really lovely, polite, and hard working.  The school is working on respect.  Everytime someone does something nice, that class gets a kind of sticker.  Which ever class collects the most stickers within a 2 week time frame, gets a prize--like a pizza lunch.  While my class was in gym, 3 secondary students showed up at the door and asked if they could help--I put them to work.  They left, with their stickers--and no sooner had they gone when 3 more turned up!!  I gave them more jobs, and they left with their stickers!!  Quite different from the last 2 years. At 3:45, we were all invited to the gym.  The purpose was to celebrate the super admin leaders.  The staff prepared beautiful snacks, and food, and they also had purchased to lovely tee shirts saying super admin, which we all signed.  Now that is a first for

 Hello friends....... Not much to report this week.  It has been darn cold.  The thermometer reads minus 29, 30 or whatever, but the wind chill pumps it up to over minus 50.  The school closed Thursday afternoon because of the cold.  The school bus couldn't run,  Honda ATV's wouldn't start, and snow mobile treads were freezing. This makes for treacherous walking as the roads are hard packed snow, turned to ice.  One must stick to the sides, where there is some snow for boots to grip on to.  At Christmas, I bought a pair of boots in Montreal, with retractable spikes--they work pretty well, but it is still slippery.  I use my walking sticks, and I don't move quickly!!  I walk everywhere, including to the coop, Saturday mornings for groceries, so I am well aware of the walking hazards.  It was interesting walking there today, about 2 k.  A very nice, big orange truck stopped to pick me up--the guy said hello, I'm the fire chief, I said, hello, I'm the grade 3 Engli
